Today Elena brings us a review of a classic title, first published nearly thirty years ago! Enjoy!
The Wild Children by: Felice Holman
Alex is a bright, 12-year old boy who spends his days
being careless and free, up until one morning following the Bolshevik
Revolution, when soldiers come and take away his whole family. He is now left
alone, with nothing and only his young teacher to turn to. He proceeds on a
journey to find his relatives. Through the snow and freezing temperatures of
Russia, Alex struggles to eat and keep alive. Within days, he is starving, and
just about ready to give up, when he assists a young gang member, and they help
him by taking him in as one of their own. Alex learns to steal and to survive,
and so begins a new journey, but will anyone ever be free? Must they live this
way forever? Find out in The Wild Children! This is a great and exciting, as
well as adventurous book for teens over 13, as there is some foul language.
Despite this, it is an amazing and educational story!

(note from Kat - we no longer have this title in the system, but we do have tons of fantastic historic fiction in the collection like The Darkest Corner of the World by Urve Tamberg about Estonia during WWII).
