Hamilton Youth Poetry slam!

A cool upcoming local event - a poetry slam at the Lyric Theatre downtown run by Hamilton Youth Poetry Slam.

I'm going to c+p from their facebook page...

February 19th will be another qualifying slam to gain points towards making the youth slam playoffs. The top 5 poets on the night receive points. You must slam at least twice during the season to qualify for playoffs (May 21st 2013).

6pm workshop
7pm Open Mic & Slam

We have a workshop, an open mic, a poetry slam and a featured performer. This month we are excited to bring a local legend to the HYP-Slam stage, the one, the only, Truth Is...

Truth Is … is a multiple time individual slam champion, she is on the inaugural 2012 Slamtario championship team, a 8x national & 7x regional spoken word team member; participating in well over 200 slams. She has participated in several of the Tedx series and has graced the stage of the prestigious 'When Sisters Speak' spoken word concerts 4x. She is a poet, a writer, a motivational speaker & an arts educator. In addition to Slam and a long list of feature performances across Canada and the U.S., Truth Is … has headlined in several conferences focused on social equity, gender equality, youth motivation and the labour movement. She has also recently opened up for Canadian Hip-Hop idol K-OS & legendary activist Angela Davis.

A great leader and powerful public speaker of our time has been noted for using thunderclap rhythm with a distinctive voice, blending ecstasy and despair. That has also been used as a description of her style. Her passion is only surpassed by her desire to explore and express the truth itself. This becomes obvious when her poetry is spoken.

All poets 13-22 years of age are welcome to perform. All poetic styles are welcome as well.

There are rules however...no props or costumes may be used in your performance. No musical instruments or pre recorded music allowed and the poet reading must be the writer of the work. Beat boxing, singing, whistling, using your body as a percussive instrument IS ALLOWED. There is also a 3 minute time limit and you should have 2 poems ready to perform if you are slamming.

Hope you guys come out on Tuesday! For more info, see their Facebook page.

Piclits

I was looking for ideas for a poetry-type program for April (we plan in advance!) and I stumbled across this really cool website called Piclits.com.

You drag and drop words onto a photo backdrop to make poems or prose, sort of like magnetic poetry.

Cool, right?

See what you can come up with and link the results in the comments. I know there are some great writers out there!

Celebrate Poetry Month!

Yes, I realize it's already 12 days into National Poetry Month. Would you believe me if I said I was busy writing poetry?

(No, I wouldn't either).

If you're not normally into poetry (like me), you may still enjoy novels in verse. A novel in verse is basically a series of poems that tell a story. I didn't think I would like novels in verse, but I picked up Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse for a class and really loved it. Novel in verse is a really unique way to tell really heartbreaking stories (Out of the Dust is a story that takes place during the Great Depression).

The novels in the scrolly thing above are sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes hopeful, and deal with issues from death to break-ups to personal injury due to shark attack. I hope you give one a try. If nothing else, they're really quick reads and are perfect if you only have five or ten minutes to read at a time. I think that novel in verse would be a great way to tell scary stories too but I had trouble finding any (and no action-adventure poetry either! Someone should write that!)

If writing poetry is more your thing (and if so I bow down to you), then I really love the magnetic poetry site where you can make virtual magnetic poetry. You can play online here with a bunch of different editions.

If you do write poetry, please consider submitting something for our writing competition Power of the Pen. You can find out all the details here!
