Wes and June do not "meet cute." They do not swoon with desire. They do not instantly feel like soul mates. This is not that kind of love story. - publisher's description of 'The Big Crunch' by Pete Hautman.
the premise: Not too long ago I talked about how much I'm a sucker for stories where the characters "meet cute". In fact I even gave you a list of other books where this happens. The Big Crunch is not that kind of book. June and Wes are friends who sort of hang out and then sort of collide and even after that, it sounds like everything is still uncertain and filled with 'sort of's.
why I'm dying to read it: Sometimes I'm really into these kind of stories, where there's no big grand romance because let's face it, these are probably the kinds of love stories that are more likely to happen. I was really attracted to the book by the cover art and in fact I immediately wished that it was a graphic novel so I could have a book filled with that art. I think the cover really conveys what happens in the book too (although I won't know until I read it).
how long I have to wait: until January! Woe! My to-read pile is ginormous right now though so that's probably a good thing.
while you're waiting check out: Getting the Girl by Susan Juby is another high school story in which friends become more (and it's hilarious to boot). If you want to get a sense of Pete Hautman's writing, check out his earlier work including How To Steal a Car.
