New Poll!

new poll, this time career related. Any idea what you want to do when you're done high school? Apprenticeship? University? College? Job?

(Don't panic if you don't have it figured out. What I wanted to be in high school turned out completely different than what I ended up being, so even if you have Plans they sometimes change).

Also, check out the new moving book thinger. New and upcoming futuristic reads to satisfy your thirst for dystopia. I've just noticed that there's lots of... girls on the covers but I promise that they're not just for girls. (Maybe that will be next month's scrolly book theme... only kidding).

Happy 2011, readers! According to the poll, some of you (most of you) weren't sure if you were going to be making New Years Resolutions. Hopefully you've figured it out by now.

I'm pleased to announce that Magdalena has won herself a copy of Delirium, courtesy of our friends at HarperTeen. In a forgetful move surprising absolutely no one, I have forgotten Delirium at home, but will ship it tomorrow to your branch which means it should be there Friday in time for the weekend. Yay!

To the left is the original cover that is on my copy. You can check out the actual cover below. Which do you like better? I don't think either really does much to tell you what the book is about (not that most covers do nowadays) but I think I prefer the cover they picked.

You guys have been busy! 44% of you have read over 100 books this year - crazy! I didn't read quite that many but there's always next year!

Today's poll is on New Years resolutions - are you making them? Breaking them? Don't care? For the last couple years I've made reading-related resolutions (you know you're a librarian when...). My resolution last year to read more adult fiction (as oppose to the teen and kids books I usually read) pretty much failed but I am optimistic about my resolutions this year! Why not resolve to read all of the Top Novel books over the summer? I promise it won't be hard - they're going to be awesome.

so 40% of you guys only write for school but a lot of people do enjoy writing in their spare time, whether it's fanfic or poetry or whatever. Awesome!

The poll this time around ties in with thinking about books at the end of the year. How many have you read? If you don't remember, try enabling 'Recently Returned' in the catalog. It will keep track of everything that you return to the library. Once you log in, go to Account Settings (at the top) - Privacy and tick off Enable Recently Returned. Or you can use a site like Librarything or GoodReads to keep track of what you read.

So the poll was a mixed one this time. If you'll recall, I aked how you picked books. Most of you pick books by their covers but a lot of you also trust your friends to recommend books that you might like. A lot of you also go looking for books by authors that you already enjoy or series that you're already addicted to. Less people worry about the blurb on the front or if it's going to be monstruously long or even if your favourite celebs have read it.

The two-week poll on reading spots has come to a close! Most of you guys read in your rooms, probably because it's a quiet and comfy place (not to mention fairly private for those times you burst into laughter/tears). My favourite answer? 'Anywhere I can'. It's so true - you never know when you're going to be bored and wish you had a book. Best to always be prepared!

This biweekly poll is on how you find/pick books. I'm guilty of all of the above - I pick books (for my personal reading, not the library*) based on completely arbitrary things like if I like the cover and will avoid books that seem to have an intimidating number of pages. I have even been known to put books on hold because a certain celebrity crush was reading it (since obviously I'm going to meet them and discuss literature). So, now you know all my guilty little book secrets, give me yours.

*my collection buying guidelines are slightly less arbitrary than what rock stars are reading.

Gaming Poll!

So it looks like most of you guys game on Wii or on your computers. I'm a computer gamer myself but am looking to buy a PS3 - any thoughts? I forgot to add 'Nintendo DS' to the poll, but luckily there was an 'other' option that some people used. Overall, most of you seem to be gamers. Sweet!

Wrestlemania Reading Challenge in full swing!

The Wrestlemania Reading Challenge started this past Saturday. You have until October 25th - Monday - to pick up and complete a pledge form so get thee to a library! All the details are here if you have no idea what I'm talking about. You only have to pledge to read 5 books by April, guys. I know a lot of you read 12 books over three months, this should be a piece of cake!

Good luck with the projects! I'm looking forward to seeing them when they're all done! 

Also in poll news, 55.56% of you use facebook and the rest aren't on any social networking sites at all! I am guilty of being on practically every social networking site - I like connecting online. I'm thinking about making a facebook just for teens at HPL so I was curious how many people were on it and if that would be an easier way of keeping in touch than email or blogging. The jury is out! Apologies for double-posting but I just realized that I didn't talk about last week's poll!

Most of you guys are either not fans of audio/e-books or have never tried them, according to the poll. Interesting! I, myself, also prefer to have a book in my hands but I'm hoping to give e-books another try. The idea of checking something out from home and having it be immediately available appeals to my lazy nature and as someone pointed out to me, when you're listening to an audio books you can do other things at the same time and I do love multi-tasking.

So I'm going to give audio and e-books another try and I hope you will too (especially since we're about to get some good ones!). You can search for them here!

And the top movie of the summer is...

Eclipse! Shocker! You guys also loved Sorcerer's Apprentice though, which I haven't seen yet. Step-Up 3D and Last Airbender got no love and the rest were somewhere in between.

There were lots of movies based on books this summer! Eclipse, Scott Pilgrim, Charlie St. Cloud, and probably a couple more I'm missing.
