When did it debut? 1983! Turning 30 this year.
What's the deal? Basically Alanna pretends to be a boy so she can be a knight while her twin brother goes in her stead to learn magic. Naturally, there's a lot of tension as she hides her secret and also magic, sword fighting and intrigue! It's the whole package (my packages always include magic).
Why should I read it now? Well, Tamora Pierce is still publishing things in the world that Alanna began and it's a good idea to start at the beginning. Also, I feel like we're getting a lot of strong female protags lately and Alanna fits right in.
