This week's book, Chopsticks by Jessica Anthony and Rodrigo Corral, has been described as "part scrapbook, part graphic novel, part 'I-Spy' game, all telling a story that is a mystery."
At first I was drawn in by the cover and then I poked around and found some really interesting reviews and now I'm hooked. It also has an app! If you have an i-device, you might want to check it out.
So let's talk about this book/graphic novel/app thing.
the premise: Glory is a young piano prodigy. She falls for the boy next door and it sounds like she finds herself unwinding and going a bit crazy, at least judging by the description of: "Ultimately the reader must decipher what is real, what is imagined, and what has been madness all along." Huh. It sounds part-psychological thriller, part-romance and part-I don't know what.
why I'm dying to read it: I really love books that use visual medium to convey story. The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick is one of my favourites and Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld is also illustrated gorgeously. This sounds like the images are even more intrinsic to the story though, as it's part I-Spy.
how long I have to wait: Well, the app is available now so if I break down, I might just buy it to play with it. Otherwise I need to wait until the library gets a copy in. If you're impatient, I should let you know that it hit shelves last month.
while you're waiting check out: Hrm. Hard to know what to suggest with this one. Another time I've seen media used in an interesting way is with Cathy's Book by Sean Stewart but I'm drawing a blank otherwise. Have you guys seen anything similar? Part scrapbook, part novel, part mystery?
