Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
Tally Youngblood lives in a world where everyone is ugly until age sixteen, when they receive a special operation to turn them drop-dead pretty. Tally can’t wait for her birthday, but for now she must wait in Uglyville. She meets another Ugly named Shay, who is not eager to receive her operation and urges Tally to run away with her to a mystical place called the Smoke. Tally does not which to join her, but would rather receive the operation and become a Pretty for life. When she is caught up in a whirlwind of strange events, she must find her way to the Smoke alone. There, she meets a whole group of Uglies who want to stay that way. During her time with them, she starts to question why the City is so eager to turn everyone into a Pretty, and what changing her appearance will change in the rest of her life.
The Uglies, Pretties, Specials, and Extras books take place in a dystopian world set in futuristic North America. I would recommend them to anyone who enjoys books like The Hunger Games, as they have a similar feel to them. The government is in control of everything, and a group of young radicals is willing to risk everything to be free from tyranny. I really enjoy Uglies and could not put it down. Definitely a worthwhile read, but it takes a couple chapters before you really understand what if going on.
